The chimes you see to the left are a cheap set that I got out at Garden Ridge Pottery in 1996. When they were brand new they were really loud. With the passing of the years and the accumulation of rust, however, their song is of a softer and more muted quality. As I add more chimes to the collection now and then and their number grows, they sound even better. This is how they looked in the fall of 1999. Wonderful music to watch the birdies by.
The picture to the right shows the addition of an extra perch to the birdfeeder assembly. Holes in the plastic bottle made using a flame heated ice pick acts as a holder for a stick. The birds take turns at the feeding perches and the ones awaiting their chance at them can wait here.
This is a Native Texas Pecan tree. In the early 1960's when my family moved to Austin, I helped my step father plant this one in the back yard. It was just a stick coming up out of the ground back then. Most of the trees in the neighborhood were like this because it was a new development in South Austin built upon what once had been just open meadow. As the trees got taller through the years, the squirrels became more numerous.
